HBR《Stand Out in a Job Interview》与 STAR 行为面试法。

Interviewer: Good morning, Chen. Thanks for coming in. To start, could you tell me a little about yourself and your background?

Candidate: Of course. I’m a software developer with four years of experience, mostly building backend services for e-commerce platforms. I enjoy turning vague requirements into reliable, well-tested code, and recently I’ve been leading a small team of three.

Interviewer: Great. Let’s move on to a behavioral question. Tell me about a time when you had to deliver a project under a very tight deadline.

Candidate: Sure. Last year, a client asked us to ship a payment feature two weeks earlier than planned, because a regulatory deadline had moved. The team was already at full capacity.

Interviewer: That sounds challenging. What did you do?

Candidate: First, I sat down with the product owner and cut the scope to a minimal viable version — we agreed on what could wait. Then I prioritized the critical path, split the work into daily chunks, and set up a morning stand-up so blockers surfaced early. I also flagged the risk to stakeholders honestly, instead of promising the impossible.

Interviewer: And how did it end?

Candidate: We delivered on time with zero critical bugs, and the client extended our contract afterwards. What I learned is that a good deadline is negotiated, not just met — communication matters as much as coding.

Interviewer: That’s exactly the mindset we’re looking for. Any questions for us?

Candidate: Yes — how does the team handle on-call rotation and feedback?

  1. behavioral question /bɪˈheɪvjərəl ˈkwestʃən/ (n. phrase) 行为面试题——要求用过去经历举例回答 — Interviewers use behavioral questions to predict how you’ll act on the job.
  2. STAR method /stɑː ˈmeθəd/ (n. phrase) STAR 法(Situation-Task-Action-Result,情境-任务-行动-结果)— Structure your answer with the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
  3. tight deadline /taɪt ˈdedlaɪn/ (n. phrase) 紧迫的期限 — We had a tight deadline, so I cut the scope to a minimal viable version.
  4. prioritize /praɪˈɒrətaɪz/ (v.) 按优先级排序 — I prioritized the critical path and pushed everything else back.
  5. stakeholder /ˈsteɪkhəʊldə/ (n.) 利益相关方 — I flagged the risk to stakeholders honestly instead of hiding it.
  6. deliverable /dɪˈlɪvərəbl/ (n.) 可交付成果 — We agreed on the deliverables for the first release.
  7. blocker /ˈblɒkə/ (n.) 阻碍问题(敏捷用语)— Our morning stand-up helped blockers surface early.
  8. on-call rotation /ɒn kɔːl rəʊˈteɪʃn/ (n. phrase) 值班轮换 — How does the team handle on-call rotation and feedback?

  4. 录音对比:录下自己读 Candidate 的最后一句话(a good deadline is negotiated, not just met),与 Rachel’s English 中的语调对比。

Could you walk me through that? / What was your specific role? / What would you do differently?
How does the team handle feedback? / What does success look like in the first six months?
