Shawn Achor — The happy secret to better work(更好工作的快乐秘诀) 来源:TEDxBloomington 2011|正面心理学 / 幸福感与生产力 今日时长:约 6 分钟(跟读 + 即兴各 2–3 分钟)

📖 原文/对话(来源:TED「The happy secret to better work」)

When I was seven years old, my little sister Amy fell off our bunk bed and broke her leg. In a panic, I tried to stop her crying before our parents found out, so I told her, “Amy, wait — don’t cry! Did you see how you landed? No human lands on all fours like that. Amy, I think this means you’re a unicorn.” Somehow, the idea of being a unicorn won over the pain, and she smiled and climbed back onto the bed.

That silly moment, I later realized, contained a profound truth about how our minds work. As a psychology researcher at Harvard, I spent years studying why some people thrive while others merely survive. We tend to believe a formula for success: if I work harder, I’ll be more successful, and if I’m more successful, then I’ll be happier. But that formula is scientifically broken and backwards. Every time your brain has a success, you simply move the goalposts — get good grades, now you need better grades; get a good job, now you need a better one. Because happiness sits on the far side of success, your brain never actually arrives.

The real secret is to reverse the formula. If you raise your level of positivity in the present, your brain experiences what I call the “happiness advantage”: your intelligence, creativity, and energy all rise. In fact, a positive brain is 31% more productive than a negative, neutral, or stressed one. The good news is that happiness is trainable. Writing down three new things you’re grateful for, every single day, for 21 days in a row, begins to rewire your brain to scan for the positive first. When you change your lens, you don’t just feel better — you perform better.

  3. 长难句突破:挑出 “Every time your brain has a success, you simply move the goalposts” 与 “your brain experiences what I call the happiness advantage”,慢速读 5 遍直到流利。
  4. 脱稿复述:合上材料,用自己话说出 “the formula is broken and backwards” 是什么意思(中英文皆可)。

  1. Do you agree that happiness leads to success more than success leads to happiness? Why or why not?
  2. What are three small things you feel grateful for today?
    • 参考要点:用具体名词而非空话(a warm coffee / a friend’s message / finishing a task);练习 “I’m grateful for… because…” 句型。
  3. If you could reverse one habit in your daily work or study, what would it be?

“Don’t wait to be successful to be happy — flip the script, and let happiness fuel your success.”
