Cultivated Meat)

Cultivated meat, also called lab-grown or cell-based meat, is no longer a science experiment confined to a petri dish. In 2020, Singapore became the first country to approve it for sale; in 2023, the United States followed with regulated clearance for cultivated chicken. The idea is deceptively simple: instead of raising and slaughtering billions of animals, scientists take a small sample of animal cells, feed them the nutrients they would naturally receive inside a body, and let them multiply in large steel tanks called bioreactors. The result looks, cooks, and tastes like conventional meat — without the farm, the slaughterhouse, or the manure.

Why does this matter? Animal agriculture is responsible for roughly fourteen percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions, consumes vast amounts of land and water, and is a leading cause of deforestation and biodiversity loss. Proponents argue that cultivated meat could slash emissions, spare animals from industrial confinement, and reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases jumping from animals to humans. For a planet expected to feed nearly ten billion people by 2050, it offers a tantalizing alternative to the status quo.

Yet the road ahead is bumpy. The biggest hurdle is cost: the first cultivated beef burger, unveiled in 2013, cost over three hundred thousand dollars to produce. Although prices have fallen dramatically, a scalable, affordable product remains years away. Critics also question whether energy-hungry bioreactors are truly greener than efficient pasture, and whether consumers will ever embrace “meat without slaughter.” Regulators, traditional farmers, and food giants are watching closely. Whether cultivated meat becomes a supermarket staple or a costly curiosity may well define the future of dinner — and the health of the planet.

  3. 难点句拆分跟读:把 “scientists take a small sample of animal cells, feed them the nutrients they would naturally receive inside a body, and let them multiply…”

  1. Do you think cultivated meat will replace traditional meat in your lifetime? Why or why not?
The main obstacle is…” 组织。
  2. Would you be willing to try lab-grown meat? What would convince you?
    • 参考要点:谈安全(safety / regulation)、口味(taste)、伦理(animal welfare);用条件句 “If it were cheaper and clearly labelled, I would…”。
  3. Who should pay for making this technology affordable — governments, companies, or consumers?
    • 参考要点:政府补贴(subsidy)、企业研发(R&D)、市场选择(market);用 “In my view, a mix of… is the fairest approach.”

  2. 连读(linking):slaughter billions of animals 中 “billions of” 的 /z/ 与 /əv/ 自然连读;instead of raising 中 “of” 弱读成 /əv/ 并与前后词黏连。

“The question is not whether we can grow meat in a lab, but whether we can feed the world without destroying it.”
