选题 Our love of pets(我们对宠物的爱,Neil & Georgie)。

📖 原文/对话(来源:BBC Learning English「6 Minute English — Our love of pets」)

Neil: Hello. This is 6 Minute English from BBC Learning English. I’m Neil.

Georgie: And I’m Georgie. It’s often said that your personality is reflected in your pet — the animal that you keep in your home as a companion and treat kindly. “Dog people” are supposed to be friendly, enthusiastic and loyal, whereas “cat people” are described as introverted, proud and sensitive. Are you a “dog person” or a “cat person”, Neil?

Neil: I’m definitely a “dog person”, Georgie. I want a pet that’s friendly and loves me, not a lazy cat that sits around all day waiting for food.

Georgie: Whether you’re a “dog person”, a “cat person”, or you keep a goldfish, hamster or parrot, the British are well known as a nation of animal lovers. In the UK, 52% of owners describe their pet as their “best friend”, and in 2021, 18 million homes had at least one pet — meaning, for the first time, there were more households with a pet than without.

Neil: In this programme, we’ll hear how our relationship with pets has changed over the centuries, and learn some useful new vocabulary. But first, a question, Georgie. Thanks to the internet, modern pets are going online. What percentage of dogs and cats in the UK do you think have their own social media profile? Is it: a) 7%, b) 17%, or c) 70%?

Georgie: It sounds crazy, but I’ll guess 17% of British pets have their own social media account.

Neil: OK, Georgie. I’ll reveal the answer later. For centuries, keeping a pet was a luxury only the rich could afford — a status symbol showing high living standards and disposable income. Today, pets are part of the family, and we even anthropomorphise them, giving them human feelings and birthday parties.

Georgie: Exactly. Research shows that the bond between people and pets improves our well-being, lowering stress and loneliness. But that closeness also brings responsibility — and cost.

Neil: Right. So, Georgie, my answer was…?

Georgie: The correct answer is b) 17% — one in six UK pets has a social media profile!

Neil: Amazing. From status symbols to best friends, our love of pets has truly evolved.

  2. 逐句精跟(Sentence-by-sentence):挑出 3 个你最吃力的长句,例如 “Whether you’re a ‘dog person’… there were more households with a pet than without.”

  1. Are you a “dog person” or a “cat person”?
    • 参考要点:可以说 “I’m a dog person because I love their loyalty and energy.” 或 “I prefer cats — they’re independent and low-maintenance.”
  2. Do you think keeping a pet is good for a person’s well-being?(养宠物有益于人的身心健康吗?)
    • 参考要点:先给立场 “Yes, absolutely.”,再用理由支撑——“Pets reduce loneliness and give us routine.”,也可补一句反面 “but they cost time and money.”
  3. If you had disposable income to spend, would you buy an expensive pet as a status symbol?(若有闲钱,你会买昂贵宠物当身份象征吗?)
    • 参考要点:用 status symbol 与 living standards 组织观点;可答 “No — a pet should be a companion, not a show-off.”

  2. 连读(Linking):“our love of pets” 中 love 以元音 /ʌ/ 结尾、of 以元音 /ɒ/ 开头,自然连读成 “love-of”;pets 的 /s/ 与后面词首辅音也要顺滑过渡,不要每个词都断开。
  3. 弱读(Weak form):and 在句中常弱读成 /ənd/ 甚至 /ən/(如 “friendly and loyal” → /ˈfrendli ən ˈlɔɪəl/);for 弱读成 /fə/。

“From status symbols to best friends, our love of pets has truly evolved.”
